Essay Question 2Marginalization is the concept of a group of people being treated differently by society. In some civilizations, this group of people would be kept in positions of lesser power and importance. This concept has been repeated for hundreds of years all over the world. These groups of people have skin tones, genders, religious influences, etc. different. Some examples of this were Muslims and Jews in Europe, during the time of the Protestant Reformation. Women would also be included, as would Hindus in Muslim empires. An example of marginalization would be that of women in the Ottoman Empire. Women in this particular civilization did not enjoy a certain degree of power and independence. For example, they couldn't divorce their husbands if they ever wanted to. However, in financial terms, they could own businesses and inherit a good percentage of the money from their elders. In terms of education, they could not be educated like men. It is clear to us that society considered women less valuable to the empire than men. When it comes to jobs, women cannot sit as judges, under any circumstances, or hold any religious authority (in most states). An article based on Women in World History states that "As the Ottomans rose to power, the role and position of women within society also evolved." The Mughal Empire took place in what is now Pakistan and India. Hindus were a large majority in this empire. Emperor Abu Akbar, who ruled from 1556 to 1605, accepted the polytheistic, multicultural world. The Hindus under this empire at this time were not attacked as they were before Akbar's rule. The Hindu prisoners of war were released and converted to Islam. The Hindu school...... middle of paper ......vers is different from the image presented by McGuire because the green provides less important information. For example, the crash course video indicates that boys were kidnapped from their homes, which may still give the wrong impression that the Ottomans were cruel and callous. The textbook refines our knowledge by adding that boys as young as 6-16 years old were chosen to become janissaries, boys who had the strength to do what it takes to become janissaries. My impression was that the crash course video was misleading because agriculture was not the only source of income for the Ottomans. As a result, the crash course in world history was a less informative source of information, teaching only what they wanted you to know. I believe the section on the Ottomans in the textbook written by Von Sivers was more of a general, descriptive source of material.
