FOA MLK Speech scriptIntroductionDuring the 1950s, racism against African Americans was a prevalent problem in the United States. Even though all blacks were supposed to be free, under a corrupt legal system, blacks were mercilessly victimized. Therefore, many civil rights activists emerged to fight for equal rights for the black community. The most notable activist was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. King engaged in various boycotts and civil rights protests. Of all his civil rights efforts, the most important was the “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the “March on Washington” in 1963. The speech illustrated the issue of racism and provoked protest . public to sympathize with blacks by providing hope to the depressed African-American community. In just under 17 minutes, King influenced generations and generations of people about his dream for America's future and planted the seeds of anti-racism and racial equality in them. King used three rhetorical elements of ethos, pathos, and logos which are reinforced with metaphors in his innovative speech. PathosKing uses Aristotle's art of rhetoric, a persuasion technique, one of which is pathos. It refers to the way of using human emotions. King portrays the hardships that blacks suffer due to racism by using strong adjectives and metaphors that actually create emotions. For example, King describes the plight of African Americans as “paralyzed” by the “handcuffs of segregation” and the “chains of discrimination.” Through this, King depicts the fact that blacks are undergoing unbearable suffering; as if Negroes had committed a crime and should be locked in cells without freedom like caged animals……middle of paper……and, King beautifully parallels the major races of the world structure to present the idea that everyone, despite the their differences, belong to God and therefore are equal in the eyes of God. Both of these examples of parallelism produce strong emotions, which is pathos. In short, parallelism allows the values of anti-racism and racial equality to be easily conveyed into the minds of the audience. In conclusion, King's “I Have a Dream” played an important step in inspiring generations of blacks to never give up and made thousands of white Americans bitterly ashamed of their lack of moral and godly values, giving rise to a new beginning for American society embracing racial equality. The moving and moving content of the speech, combined with King's effective voice and use of literary devices such as Aristotle's Art of Rhetoric, made this speech the greatest of the 20th century..
