Topic > A Case Study on Dementia - 2233

ASSESSMENT 3 I will discuss the case of Mrs. Judi Sharman, a 74 year old widow suffering from severe dementia and a resident of an aged care home for the past two years. At the time of admission to residential care, he was suffering from a moderate stage of dementia, but his behavior and psychological symptoms had now worsened over the past six months. She becomes more agitated in the evening as the sun sets and at times is physically aggressive and her mood disorders become a problem for other residents and staff members as she suddenly starts screaming and disturbs others. He is also experiencing some hallucinations and delusions that represent a psychotic illness. I will now discuss the identification, assessment, and management of these symptoms using current literature. BEHAVIORAL SYMPTOMS Mr. Sharman is experiencing many behavioral symptoms such as agitation, wandering and sleep disturbances, but the agitated behavior is of most concern to healthcare professionals. Agitation is inappropriate and unexplained verbal or motor activity performed by the client and is the most common and concerning behavioral problem in dementia patients and is at its peak in the evening rather than in the morning as the sun sets (Theison et al . 2008). Mrs Sharman always causes trouble for the carer in the evenings when she refuses to take tea, medicine or wanders into the corridor. It is more prevalent in community settings than residential settings. There is ongoing research that believes it is related to some degenerative disorders or related to environmental or cultural factors (Haibo et al. 2013). There are different types of agitated behavior that Ms. Sharman displays such as constantly talking, repeating questions, shouting and yelling.
