A dystopian novel aims to highlight the current problem in a society. It is intended to be a call to action from the people who read the novel. The author of the novel wants people to solve the problem before it gets out of hand. The Parable of the Sower is one of these novels. The Parable of the Sower is a 1993 novel written by Octavia E. Butler. It's set in a dystopian California where there aren't many jobs and the government is almost non-existent. This novel follows the main protagonist Lauren Olamina through a couple of years of her life. She struggles with hyperempathy syndrome that causes her to actually feel the pain and pleasure of others. Lauren lives in a gated community where they are mostly separated from the violence of the outside world. He was living relatively well until bad things started happening. These bad things include his brother murdered in a horrible and gruesome way and his father missing and never found again. She is forced to leave because the community is being burned by drug maniacs and the rest of her family and many people in her community are killed. Lauren then begins traveling north to create her own community for her Earthseed religion, a religion based on change, and gathers survivors along the way. This book attempts to highlight a problem that was prevalent in the period in which the book was written. In the parable of the sower, Butler shows that greed is the cause of dystopia. He is saying that in his time people are getting greedier and if we don't change our ways this future where the rich get richer and the poor get poorer until almost everyone is unemployed and homeless will come to fruition. shows that Butler believes in the cause of this......middle of paper......fe and how he had to live. It wasn't his person, it was company property. The company would enslave people because they owed the company money. If they attempted to leave or stopped working they would be jailed and returned to the company. The police are also of no help. They won't do their job and take all the things you have. If they think you can be sold easily they will arrest you and sell you to the highest bidder. This is a world Butler doesn't want to see happen. It highlights people's greed and shows what would happen if this continued to happen. The only way to prevent this dystopia from becoming a reality is to stop companies from taking advantage of people and to stop people from only thinking about others and not just what they want. If this happened, dystopia would never happen and people would live in a better world.
