The variety of different foods consumed in a meal increases the amount of food consumed. This study was conducted using previous research. After evaluating all the results of the study, the conclusion was that variety is a powerful factor in increasing food consumption. Of the numerous studies evaluated in the article, a basic survival concept appears to play out. When food is available in abundance and variety (harvest time and ripe crops), humans naturally consume more. This is to obtain the vitamins and minerals necessary for ideal health. People living in cold climates would need this additional layer of fat for insulation and fuel during periods of cold weather and dietary restrictions (Polivy & Herman, 2006). In contrast, when available food and variety are limited, we reduce our intake for as long as necessary for optimal survival. The visual effect of a variety of food (Kahn and Wansink 2004) will also influence whether consumption increases or decreases. In my opinion, the variety and visual effect of food consumption are a factor that contributes to an individual's choices. If enticed by choices and appealing food, people will consume more than they need. This scenario is related to an old saying “the eyes are bigger than the stomach”.
