Domestic violence can begin for the same reasons a person faces the consequences of domestic violence. If a person has low self-esteem, he feels the need to take a higher position and be a bully in some way. Those with low incomes may feel the need to blame someone else (Judd 2013). A person who feels like they were never smart enough in school needs to feel respected and by doing so they feel like they are smart because they can control someone (Judd 2013). Young people are at risk of being abusive because at a young age you do what you are taught, so if their parents taught them to abuse, then they will start to show those characteristics too. If a young person shows signs of bad behavior, this could lead to abuse because the behavior they exemplify in their younger life will carry over into their relationships (Judd 2013). Those who abuse alcohol or drugs might be an abuser because they are not in their right mind most of the time or the drug changes their personality. If the abuser showed anger and hostility before the abuse, this is a good reason why he is taking that anger out on the person closest to him which is usually his spouse. If a person has antisocial personality traits or borderline personality traits, these illnesses can cause the person to lash out during an episode (Judd 2013). If the person has few friends or has been isolated for much of their life, they will not know what it is like to talk about their problems, or they may feel as if no one is there for them, so they will try to get rid of them through abusive actions (Judd 2013).
