The world is home to a culturally diverse population. Each culture has its own beliefs, values and truths that provide us with knowledge and a deeper appreciation of ourselves. We live in the era of globalization where culture should not be an issue. Discrimination and racism create boundaries between cultures. Everyone becomes blind to the fact that they are all part of one race, the human race. Differences in color and beliefs should not distinguish us from each other, everyone is unique and these differences should be valued. If it weren't for these differences, every day would be the same, there would be no new information to learn, nothing to gain. Coming from different backgrounds, everyone wants to be respected and welcomed in new communities, and not excluded. Embracing differences makes a society a home where everyone gets along, bringing balance to the community with freedom and equality. There are many collections of stories that deal with the nature of racism and discrimination, alienating the main characters of their identities and facing difficulties in finding their places. In the story "Swimming Lessons", by Mistry, the story focuses on the life of an Indian immigrant, who originally from Bombay moves to Toronto, facing issues of racism. Kersi, the immigrant struggles to fit into the new community as a brown immigrant. He is stereotyped because of his appearance and looked down upon. Racism brings us fear, meaning we are unable to recognize ourselves, and Kersi begins to fear rejection. Unfair generalizations are made about cultures, making people victims. Cultural boundaries should be erased, as they cause problems with an individual's personal identity. Mistry's story shows emotions... middle of paper... short stories and novels, which teach us that racism is nothing but a poison that creates many infections, destroying peace and harmony among individuals. The wall of racism must be torn down and differences must be reconciled to achieve peace. Diversity is what makes the world interesting, every culture offers positive aspects. As Martin Luther King said “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." Our national identity provides all of us with a meaningful quality and ability to accept differences and create new relationships and practices. As citizens, we all play a role in strengthening our societies by establishing bonds of respect. Racist behaviors can be changed if we take on positive roles and create the energy of equality.
