Aborigines live in reserves rich in minerals such as oil and gas. Their traditional beliefs cannot allow them to benefit from an economic venture such as mining. They believe that Mother Nature should and should be protected. In an attempt to do so, they have rules against exploiting nature like modern mining. This puts their traditional values ​​at odds with economic developments such as mining. This leaves them in a dilapidated state as poverty takes hold (Wilson and Macdonald, 2000). If Aboriginal people were to give in to mining, another issue such as land ownership would still arise. Aboriginal tribes believe vehemently in communal land ownership. Mining rights in Canada may only allow mining to occur on a piece of land owned by an individual. This makes any form of mining carried out on Aboriginal land a difficult task. The refusal to embrace development and live off their reserves has led to most Aboriginal people living in low-occupancy areas (Wilson and Macdonald, 2000). Most children live with their parents in rural areas. These parents may be illiterate and do not understand the need for formal education for their children. Without education it is difficult to find decent employment, which once again contributes to Aboriginal people's low income. Children who make it to school end up dropping out before graduating from high school.
