Topic > The World Through the Camera Lens of Graciela Iturbide

The first technique Graciela Iturbide learned from Manuel Bravo was the idea of waiting for a photograph. Manuel Bravo states in Eyes to Fly With: “Be patient, the best photos come when you least expect it” (20). This is a distinctive technique because many photographers take as many photos as possible quickly. Graciela Iturbide states: "...and yet (the photographers) can't get a photo as good as the one of Manuel Álvarez Bravo..." (Eyes To Fly With 6). Manuel Bravo taught Iturbide patience and the joy of taking photographs. He always showed patience when taking photographs. Graciela comments: "He took very few photographs, but even though he only took two shots he never felt frustrated." (Eyes to fly on 8). Graciela also learned to photograph things that interested her without disturbing the people or events taking place. As Manuel Bravo observed, he would see in this way that he, "... went to the villages, to parties, and how, almost imperceptibly, he photographed what interested him without disturbing people or offending them" (Eyes to Fly With 6 - 7). Almost immediately Graciela Iturbide began to realize the type of relationships Bravo established with his subjects. This idea of building relationships with the people being photographed directly influenced some of Graciela Iturbide's most famous photographs. All in all, the apprenticeship with Don Manuel included everything he could have wanted or needed. Graciela states: “more than his images, the thing that influenced me most deeply was witnessing his way of seeing the world… his aesthetic is what most marked my development” (Eyes to Fly With 8).
