“The poor ego has even greater difficulties; he must serve three harsh masters and must do his best to reconcile the claims and demands of all three... The three tyrants are the external world, the superego and the id. The quote was said by Sigmund Freud. Every human being is born evil but is kept in check by the rules of society. In William Golding's Lord of the Flies, Golding uses Jack, a young wild man, to start the trend of evil which then spreads to the rest of the island's inhabitants. The id is made up of all the biological components of the personality, including instincts and unconscious behavior. In Lord of the Flies, Jack represents the id. When the id wants things, it wants them immediately and without any objection. The id doesn't think about how bad this might be in the long term or for others. Throughout the book, Jack is always telling people what to do without letting them have any say in the matter. For example, this is demonstrated when Jack says, "'Tomorrow,'" the chief continued, "'we will hunt again.'" He pointed to this savage and the one with his spear. “'Some of you will remain here to improve the cave and defend the gate. I will take some hunters with me and bring back some meat. The defenders of the goal will see that the others do not intrude'” (160). Early on, Jack's lust for power becomes palpable. He wants power and he wants it now. Jack becomes obsessed with killing a pig. This is shown when he says "Quote". He refuses to listen to other characters when they warn him about how bad his choices are. He is willing to resort to illegal activities to get what he wants, because that is what the Id does. One way Jack tries to gain power is to put fear in the eyes of the villagers about the beasts... center of the card... describes Jack as someone might describe a beast or monster appearing somewhere. This idea of evil then spread among the kids. If Jack hadn't started being evil, Ralph might still have been in power and society might have been at its peak. But since Jack was given the role of the id, he had to be evil and teach the kids what it means to be evil and do evil things. This is Golding's way of saying that every human being has evil within them and there is no one without evil. Almost all characters show some sign of evil within themselves. Some examples are: (quotes) All these examples show how Golding tried to express that all human beings are born with evil inside them but society keeps them under control with laws. Lord of the Flies is a great lesson that shows many examples of life-changing events and lessons that can help people in their own lives.
