An analysis of team leadership models, research should not only focus on the common skills among team leadership models, but focus on effective teams and leadership models of the team. I increasingly see the use of effective team building and effective team leadership as in-demand skills. What exactly does this imply? Understanding the group's perspective and context should be a goal before applying group leadership models. To understand the perspective, the definition of “team” should be clarified, not all teams should take the same approach as the word “team” is used frequently and can indeed be understood and applied differently. According to Katzenbach and Smith (2005) not all groups are teams, managers should understand the differences. Katzenbach and Smith (2005) define a work group as follows (excerpt from HBR article): Strong and clearly focused leader Individual accountability The purpose of the group is the same as the broader mission of the organization Work products individual Conducts efficient meetings Measures its effectiveness indirectly through influencing others (such as the company's financial performance) Discusses, decides and delegates Alternatively, Katzenbach and In the sense of how members and functions interact with the problem or the team's goal, Hill's leadership model provides a comprehensive framework that can be applied when making and addressing decision-making processes. Northouse called it a “cognitive guide that helps team leaders design and maintain effective teams (Northouse, 2013).” Hill's Leadership Model is the best overall guide combined with understanding the context and perspective that a leader can then build an effective team and lead the team to the end
