Manifest Destiny: The Ugly Truth Behind the Beautiful Lies? The point of view on Manifest Destiny that I found most convincing and close to my interpretation was " Manifest Destiny as an expression of white superiority is but one explanation for what became a clear rise in anti-Mexican sentiment in the 1850s.” This perspective seemed to me to be the only one that did not bypass what seemed to be the logical truth and explanations of why Manifest Destiny took place: to search for Native American lands; anti-Mexican sentiments; for the prospects they could gain from the western lands; and for political reasons. While many other perspectives saw Manifest Destiny in the light of goodness and/or for religious reasons, I believe there was a bitter and more realistic truth; the interpretation of Manifest Destiny that I think is the most obvious is that Manifest Destiny was a cover for many people's greed for the future prospects they could gain from those western lands. If it was true that people really wanted to expand in the name of religion, then why was the Indian Removal Act introduced? I believe the real answer is because they were rapacious for the privileged and bountiful land. By acquiring the West they were able to obtain valuable resources. Acquiring the west through the Treaty of Hidalgo, people could then move west to hunt fur, mine precious metals, and start their own farms or plantations. I don't think there is anything about the spread of the religion and culture of Manifest Destiny, just the underlying motive of self-success and the government's thought of strengthening its economy and power through the addition of land. The Mexican-American War was not about religion, but was for the sole purpose of acquiring lands. America was then able to rapidly increase population and
