A wise man once said, "Keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer." If only Fortunato had known that he was more of an enemy than a friend, he would not have fallen into Montresor's trap. I guess you can't blame Fortunato for believing in Montresor because they consider each other friends. However, according to Montresor, Fortunato stepped on his toes too many times. In person, Montresor doesn't show his true feelings to Fortunato because I think he is a silent but deadly type. As readers, we discovered that not only did Montresor want revenge; he wanted to inflict as much pain on Fortunato as possible. Putting trust in a person can be difficult; Personally, I think people should take everything into consideration before saying “I trust you”. The three main topics that I found interesting in “The Cask of Amontillado” are the value of trust, Fortunato's weakness, and the irony of the situation. According to dictionary.com, trust is defined as the dependence on the integrity, strength, ability, assurance, etc., of a person or thing. Montresor, as I mentioned, does not show his hatred towards Fortunato's actions. We know that Montresor is unreliable because he told the audience the truth about his feelings towards Fortunato. A symbolic image that can describe the relationship between Fortunato and Montresor is the coat of arms that flanks the Montresors. The coat of arms is a giant golden foot, a giant golden foot crushing a snake in the blue grass. The snake's fangs are embedded in the heel of the foot. I believe the foot is Fortunato and the snake is Montresor. There was no background information on what Fortunato did to the narrator, but whatever it is, it seems like it broke the camel's back in their... middle of paper... I mean, I find it funny how Montresor tells the audience this story 50 years later and at this time it does not appear that he was satisfied with his decision. Overall, the story presents us with a situation where a man was so blind to the obvious that it caused his life. Obviously you wouldn't consider one of your friends ending up killing you, but if your friend's motto is "You can't mess with me and get away with it," then maybe you shouldn't mess with them at all. There are friends who would laugh at all your jokes and then there are those who get offended if you cross the line; therefore, be careful what you say at all times. Don't show people your weaknesses because these will be the other person's advantages. Just because you trust a person doesn't mean you reveal everything to them. At the end of the day, “Keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer.”
