Why was William J. Clinton, also known as Bill Clinton, the greatest president in American history? As the forty-second president and the first Democrat to be in office since 1981, Clinton had a lot of pressure and a lot to live up to (Neumann 1). Clinton had promised to reduce the federal government budget, increase public investment, lower poverty rates, lower the teen birth rate and infant mortality; lower the crime rate, ban homosexuals from serving in the military, and create a more effective foreign policy (Neumann 1). Once in office, President Clinton immediately went to work reducing the federal government's debt (Neumann 1). . To decrease the debt, Clinton wrote a passage to raise taxes and cut spending (Neuman 1). At the end of the Clinton presidency the debt was reduced by 363 billion dollars (Neumann 2). It was the largest debt repayment in three years in American history (“The” 3). With Clinton as president, federal government spending on the economy fell from 22.2 percent in 1992 to a projected 18.5 percent in 2000, the lowest level since 1966 (“The” 4). With Bill Clinton in office, unemployment fell, he raised educational standards, increased school choice, and doubled investments in education and training (“The” 2). He created more than 22 million jobs during his presidency; more than any other president in a single administration (“The” 2). It also had the largest number of homeowners in American history with 67.7% of people owning homes (“The” 2). Unemployment fell to more than 7 percent in 1993 under President Clinton, then fell to 4.0 in 2000 (“The” 2).
