We then move on to the next stage, bringing with us the knowledge from the previous stage and influencing the way we behave. Erikson's stages of personality development are different from Freud's because one is social and the other is sexual. Erikson believed that the stages were related to socialization and to move from one stage to the next one had to pass the last stage. In Freud's work he believed that it had to do with sexualization and that each stage had something to do with a sexual feeling. Both Erikson and Freud believed in the imperatives of the unconscious mind as part of development (Education Portal,2014). I can identify more with Erikson's stages for my own life and can apply them to my children's lives better than Freud's. We grow best in routine and this affects the outcome of each stage. We were not stuck at any stage and continued to develop along the timeline established by Erikson.
