In class we discussed binary oppositional logic and how it affects our daily lives. In my terms of binary oppositional logic, binary opposites mean a concept or idea that can only be clearly understood by comparing it to how different something else or something opposite is. For example, the meaning of male cannot be understood without female. From the time we are children, we are taught what is good/bad, hot/cold, smart/stupid, left/right, off/on, and so on ad infinitum. The two binarisms I would like to discuss in my article are good/bad and same/different. At first I was a little hesitant to choose these two opposing binarisms. But I realized the impact of how the two binary oppositions have affected my entire life. I was born the youngest child with an older sister and brother. My older brother, Matthew, is severely autistic. Matteo is different. He doesn't act normal. The autistic world he navigates in life is different from that of normal people. So much of my life has been about how his different and bad behaviors have affected my life. Matthew can be quite loud and nervous in public places such as restaurants and shops. This behavior usually subjects me and my family to unwanted comments or scrutiny from other people. Normal, good behavior in public would normally require quiet voices and calm walks. His loud voice and agitated movements have always been considered bad and inappropriate in public places. Since I was a child I have always been taught what good and bad behaviors are. Of course, good behaviors have always been the dominant binary, that is, the standard that everyone should adhere to. This has been a standard throughout history. The good and the normal will prevail over the bad and the different. Bad and different behaviors are the subordinates I should avoid and hide so as not to get into trouble. The dominant binary between good and normal compliant behaviors should be carried forward daily to avoid criticism and alienation from parents, peers, teachers, and strangers. For example, in the reading “Get Your Gender Binary Off My Childhood” Jane Ward states: “The moment we call this child a girl, we invite the world to see a beautiful princess and pretend that she is what he or she has always been.” . (Ward 2012 page 3). The normal understanding expected from girls is usually seen as wearing frilly dresses and playing with dolls. We are taught this from an early age and anything else is considered different or wrong. Girls having “different” sexual preferences or playing football are bad or unbecoming behaviors for that gender. Likewise, my brother was also expected to behave a certain way in public because he was seen as a normal adult male. I learned that oppositional logic.
