Topic > A review of the play The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

On a crisp autumn evening, I attended a play. The theater presents Washington Irving's famous speculative fiction, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The show was directed by Janette Gaines. The character, Ichabod Crane, was played by Lucas Schmidt. The setting took place in the small fictional town of Tarry Town. The show took audiences back in time to the 17th century, around 1790. Although several versions of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow exist, the plot of this story centered on the legend of a Hessian soldier, Major Andre, who he was decapitated by a cannonball during the Revolutionary War. Legend tells of a headless horseman who goes into battle every night in search of his head. Say no to plagiarism. Get a tailor-made essay on "Why Violent Video Games Shouldn't Be Banned"? Women wore different variations of colorful skirts and jackets with accessories such as shawls, scarves and ribbons. Women also wore long Grecian shirts with petticoats. Some dresses appeared to be made up of silk with metallic looking sequences while some of the simpler dresses worn by peasant women looked plain with just a scarf or shawl. The men wore long-tailed coats with trousers, and some villagers wore suspenders and overalls. Some men wore knee-length trousers with long coats and top hats. Children's clothing consisted of girls wearing dresses called dresses and boys wearing pants with ruffled jackets and shirts. The first scene of the play opens as the villagers await their new schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane. When Ichabod finally arrives in Sleepy Hollow, his nervous and superstitious personality casts darkness on the villagers who love to play pranks and he soon becomes the unfortunate target of a man named Brom Bones who plays a bully in the play. Given Ichabod's polite manners and singing, he tends to impress women, especially one in particular, Katrina Van Tassel. Katrina uses Ichabod to make Brom jealous, but no one knows that Ichabod has his own deceitful motives. He is interested in Katrina not for her beauty but for her wealth. Once Brom learns that Ichabod believes in ghosts, he plots to free his unwelcome rival from Tarry Town. This is the perfect plot of one man against the legend of the headless horseman of Sleepy Hollow. Please note: this is just an example. Get a custom paper from our expert writers now. For example, everyone is good and bad. Because of this, people can identify with the characters and their struggles, goals, and eccentricities. Allowing the audience to make real-life connections with the characters makes the plot more realistic. At the same time, the plot entertained the audience and made us laugh because it poked fun at the truths behind human nature such as pranks, jealousy, intimidation, etc. The playwright is a lighthearted comedy but at the same time provides intense moments due to the beheading knight. During the show the audience sees a headless horseman wearing a black cloak carrying a jack-o-lantern. Of course this is the classic ghost plot for the Halloween season. The show is suitable for families and all ages and entertains free spirits.
