POLICE OFFICER TRAINING CURRICULUM The curriculum designed for a police officer is very important to the police officer and his or her success in his or her chosen career path. An officer's training is also very important to the community in which they serve and the department in which they work. An officer must receive training in a variety of fields to help him or her be a well-rounded police officer. Officers receive training in areas such as: law, community relations, firearms, vehicle driving, search and seizure and cultural awareness. The core curriculum offered to a new recruit is focused on providing the recruit with the best overall training that will provide him with the tools needed to become the best police officer he can be. I have developed a comprehensive curriculum that covers the basic necessities a recruit needs to become an officer. The recruit must be oriented in the world of law enforcement. Within this training I would like to highlight the fundamentals of the legal system, the functions of the criminal justice system and what role the police officer plays in the criminal justice system. A recruit must also understand that an officer must behave in a professional manner at all times and the importance of ethics and values. Ethics and values ​​must be ingrained in the recruit from day one so they know how important it is for an officer to maintain high moral and ethical standards. Another important area that needs to be covered is the professional development of the recruit and the continuation of this development as a police officer. Physical conditioning and emotional health are a necessary aspect of an officer's life. An officer must be physically and mentally fit to perform his job duties. As part of this professional development, recruits would also be trained on human relations and the fact that a police officer is many times a public relations person for their department. Officers must be able to interact well with others, colleagues and those within the community. Recruits must know the basics of firearm safety, gun care, use of force, and the possibilities and consequences of criminal and civil liability. Recruits must acquire the basics of these potentially life-saving techniques because it is likely that they will have to use these skills at some point in their career. Proper training in the use of firearms is an important part of recruit training, especially due to the possible consequences of improper use. Recruits would receive many hours of instruction in firearms safety, shooting fundamentals and range behavior. The training would also consist of practical exercises such as: ranged work for basic patrol (including practical pistols and rifles), night fire familiarization, shoot-don't-shoot scenarios, and tactical skills training. Officers must continue the training they receive in the academy and must qualify on a regular basis. I think this curriculum I designed is a good general education for recruits entering the world of law enforcement. There are many areas that need to be covered in the training because being a police officer requires a multitude of knowledge and skills. This curriculum covers relevant areas that would prepare a recruit to take to the streets as a police officer.
