One of my favorite quotes on becoming a lifelong learner is “Those people who develop the ability to continually acquire new and better forms of knowledge that they can apply to their work and life they will be the movers and shakers of our society for the indefinite future.” (Tracy, n.d.) I hope to become a “mover and shaker” in the field of special education by bridging the gap for students with moderate cognitive disabilities. Even though starting a private school seems like a daunting task, I know that this goal is absolutely achievable. I've served on two boards of start-up nonprofits serving special education students, so I know the work it takes to turn a vision into reality. I also believe that my current position as an EC teacher and EC coordinator is testing my skills and preparing me for what lies ahead. Finally, there is a school in Charlotte, North Carolina, Philip's Academy, that does very similar work to the school I want to start. Finishing my degree is
