The professor has a high position by nature, as an adult he is seen as an expert person who possesses skills and these give him power over the class. He is also responsible for the education or intellectual formation of children, as well as their education as future French citizens. In France, when you go to school you have to learn some social codes. For example, it is considered a form of respect and an act of politeness to stand up when the teacher enters the classroom. Even towards our teacher we speak and behave in a certain way which is different from our friends. For example, we cannot use “tu”, and we must use “vous”, which in English is the same pronoun as “you”, but in French there is one for the elderly as a sign of respect, and another for our friends and relatives. Furthermore, good behavior in class also involves asking permission to leave class or simply asking or answering a question; you can't just say it out loud. These rules are established by the school code and the life of the social group. Communication between teacher and student is not hierarchical. There must be space for dialogue and mutual respect.
