Topic > The Impact of Slavery and Segregation in Today's Society

Slavery and segregation are two components that have had a major impact on today's society. Slavery is morally wrong, but many people still practiced it. Nearly half the nation believed it was wrong, but were unwilling to do anything about it. The other half of the nation depended on slavery to produce goods, and this created a stalemate in the country. The freedom of slaves created segregation everywhere and many black children could not attend school to be educated. Black children were not allowed to go to school with white children, leaving many black children unable to read, write, and learn other subjects. Uncle Tom's Cabin was a story set in the southern half of the United States; portrays the struggles that African Americans face. The story shows the evils of slavery and how black people are mistreated for no reason. The Bouquet was a story set in a Southern inner city. The story depicts the prejudice that whites had against African Americans in segregated parts of the nation. At first, the white teacher believes that it is bad for her to teach the black children, but eventually she realizes how genuine and caring they are and changes her feelings towards them. Uncle Tom's Cabin and The Perfume introduce the harsh realities of slavery and segregation, as well as how African Americans show love for each other through good times and painful times. Although slavery ended, segregation still has a lasting effect on American society. There are still mistreated African Americans in some parts of the country, some people can't find jobs, and in recent times some people don't sell land to blacks. The mistreatment of African Americans occurs in both stories. In Uncle Tom's Cabin... in the center of the paper... the African-Americans faced each other. Both stories used main characters to help the reader see with new eyes how black people were mistreated and undervalued. In The Bouquet, African Americans were discriminated against and were stereotypically ignorant and useless. Mrs. Myrover teaches the children basic skills and by the end of the book, black people are found to be capable of learning and capable of being kind human beings. Uncle Tom's Cabin descriptively explains the mistreatment and misfortunes of African Americans during the pre-Civil War era. The book describes how a slave saved the life of a young girl and how he is punished. Slaves were simply treated cruelly and had no means to defend themselves or change the minds of slave owners. Both stories depict the harsh treatment of blacks and contributed to the beginning of important movements for the fair treatment of African Americans.
