Gatsby was a poor young man who was drafted into the war and later made a living trying to achieve the American dream. Fitzgerald used the character of Gatsby as a way to show his readers the almost impossible journey someone must take to achieve their wealth. The author incorporated the opinions and beliefs of his time into TJ Eckleberg's billboard. The billboard represented the bright future that awaited us and the promised wisdom. But its location in the Valley of Ashes has changed the concept of its meaning. Instead of achieving the American dream, people would end up in the wasteland for the rest of their lives. “Jimmy was destined to move on…” (164) Gatsby's father said. Like all other parents chasing the American dream, Gatsby's father, Henry Gatz, had hope. Even after Gatsby's death, his father was proud of his son's determination and success. Gatsby's death was meant to symbolize how close someone can come to achieving the Dream. But the idea will always be pursued. The American dream would not be realized because the desire for something more will never be realized
