An industry that once promoted equity and attainability was now itself becoming an obstacle to overcome. “American universities are indeed organized according to cultural norms or rules of the game of the middle and upper classes, and these norms actually constitute an invisible academic disadvantage for first-generation college students who transition to the university context” (Stephens et. al, 2012).
