Topic > Identifying Information Resources in Context - 1182

OverviewAccording to Ronald Hagler, the first of the six functions of bibliographic control, or information organization, is to identify the existence of all types of information resources as they become available. The reason for identifying resources is obvious: you need to know that a resource exists for it to have value. This applies not only to libraries, but to all information providers. This article will analyze how the Hagler function is demonstrated by the St. Charles City-County Library District (http://youranswerplace.org/home), the Einstein Archives Online (http://www.alberteinstein.info/), and the Einstein Archives Online (http://www.alberteinstein.info/). national organization's website, FlyLady.net (http://www.flylady.net/).St. Charles City-County Library District The St. Charles City-County Library District in St. Charles County, MO is organized similarly to most libraries; Cataloged book and media collections are housed in one of the District's twelve branches or at its off-site collection facility. Each individual branch is organized to help users identify materials and facilitate their use. Large signs direct users to the various collections, reference help is centrally positioned, OPACs are in plain sight for catalog searching, and multiple displays are used to highlight new or timely resources. Additionally, through its website, the City-County Library provides additional access points to most of what each branch has to offer and, in addition, hosts additional resources and links to resources owned by others. As stated, the City-County Library uses its website to keep patrons informed not only of what it has, but also what it can provide access to. Available via the web is access to the catalog and electronic resources, downloadable audio and e-...... paper medium ......ne search and organization system which requires the use of the list of folders found in the help exhibit. Finally, FlyLady describes information resources neither individually nor in groups, but rather, each page is an entity in its own right with information only retrievable via links or the rather narrow format of a keyword search. Conclusion Although these three sites have different purposes, use different technologies, and do not appear comparable on the surface, each has knowingly or unknowingly applied Hagler's first function to ensure that their information resources are discovered and used.
