The Twin Towers Penitentiary Tour was a great experience. I had the opportunity to experience a brief overview of what inmates with mental illnesses experience every day in prison. These inmates are grouped primarily based on the severity of the crime committed, the severity of their mental illness, and sexuality. The tour took place in one of the twin towers, which has seven floors and each floor houses a different level of inmates. Inmates with more serious mental disorders, who have no free time, are housed on the seventh floor. These are the inmates who most frequently throw "gas", or any form of body fluids/solids, towards staff. Examples of typical gases are feces, urine, and blood. As floors go down, inmates' degree of danger to themselves and/or others decreases. Once inmates are placed on a particular floor, inmates have the opportunity to move down floors based on their cooperation with staff and whether their mental illness appears to be controlled. Psychiatrists evaluate each inmate when he enters the facility and are able to see his progress. Some inmates never make it out of the facility even though they have served their sentence for the crime they committed. These inmates are too mentally ill to be released into the outside world. Additionally, inmates wear different colored clothes, which allows jailers to know how to deal with different inmates. Some are more dangerous than others; therefore, a jailer must be more careful with some inmates than others. Additionally, some inmates don't wear clothes because they are under suicide watch, so they only wear a blue suicide vest. For starters, inmates wear different colored clothing based on the severity of the crime committed and the severity... middle of paper ...assist an inmate or fellow prisoner when they need help. Safety is a priority. Psychiatrists are there to diagnose and treat inmates in the best possible way. They are an important part of the structure. Furthermore, in this prison, as in any other prison, there is politics. Not all units or floors have a policy, but if the floor or unit does, the inmates must follow it otherwise they will be beaten by the rest of the inmates. Inmates such as homosexuals and child molesters are given special accommodations because the system knows that if they are left with the general inmate population then they will be vulnerable. Last but not least, the prison cylinder design is very convenient to keep an eye on all the inmates from the control room. The objective is to be able to always have all the inmates under control; therefore, gaining control and security over the structure.
