The Vietnam War was the first of its kind. There were no defined enemies or battlefields, which made the situation very stressful for the soldiers stationed there. Most of Alpha Company's encounters with the enemy were unplanned. Not knowing when they would be attacked was very alarming to most men. Being in the unforgiving jungles of Vietnam meant that soldiers could try to prepare for the worst but could never relax. “When a mission took them to the mountains, they brought mosquito nets, machetes, canvas traps and extra bug juice.” They did not know the land or how to travel it day by day. At any moment something could jump out of the trees and attack, be it an animal or an enemy soldier. They were also assigned to an unknown group of men who they were told to trust with their lives.
