During World War Z by Max Brooks, readers can see how the apocalypse begins. Some of these errors can be considered individual human errors, but overall they can be seen as the failure of the government to achieve its goals. For example, at the beginning of the book, China discovered for the first time that a new disease was starting to spread. Instead of taking responsibility for this disease, they shrugged it off and redirected other countries' attention. This caused the disease to start as a small outbreak and eventually multiply. This government failure can be seen as a selfish act aimed at preserving the country's secrecy. Because they did not take the initiative to tell anyone else about the disease, people were unable to pay attention and avoid contracting the plague. Similar to the book Blindness, at first no one understood that the disease was among them. People suddenly began to go blind due to many unanswered questions. However, in Blindness there was never any real truth to be revealed to the citizens like there was in the case of World War II. In addition to the failure of government, we also see the inability to act properly in humans as well. For example, during World War II, illegal organ trafficking actions were undertaken in China. These actions were performed by Fernando Oliveira, a heart surgeon in China. Although his actions were selfish and unfair, the problem could be traced back to the government for not warning the public of the beginning of an epidemic. Dr. Oliveira saw no real harm in the human trafficking business as it was a real profit. This led to the death of the population when the disease was carried through the heart of an infected man. Once the doctors have completed the heart, the middle of the paper allows the reader to expand and decipher another meaning. The book not only focuses on explaining the current disease but allows the reader to see a bigger picture. Since everything in this book is completely historically accurate, it gives readers the freedom to formulate their own beliefs on the topic at hand. However, Brooks doesn't just focus on the country's government and citizens. It brings forward the idea that it is the fault of the country as a whole that this disease arises due to naive actions such as isolation from the problem. In a more concise vision, one could compare the world to the human body. We all live in it. The body can live without a hand or a foot. The preservation and improvement of individual parts will ultimately lead to a better quality of life for all of us, thus helping Brooks in the battle against isolationism.
