Postmodern theory has been widely discussed in the works of Jean Baudrillard and Frederic Jameson. Baudrillard refers to postmodernism as a world inhabited by all human beings. He relates postmodernism to technology, primitivism, simulation and the hyperreal. It traces the postmodernism of 1960s France. In his postmodern theory, Baudrillard criticizes society and culture. According to him, society has become so dependent on technology that it has lost touch with the real world. The real has been replaced by imitations of the real. This substitution made it difficult to distinguish between the real world and the artificial “real” world. Baudrillard explains the loss of reality through simulacra, something that replaces reality through representation. He cites Watergate and Disneyland as examples of simulacra. Baudrillard describes about three orders of simulacra. The first is linked to the pre-modern era where reality is represented by an illusion, a counterfeit or simply a mark. He associates the second order of simulacra with the industrial revolution where the break with reality begins when products are mass-produced and copies of real products proliferate, and the third order of simulacra is connected to the postmodern era where reality is lost and not easily recognisable. However, he claims that the real can still be found, but only through criticism and political activism in the second order of simulacra. (Baudrillard, 123). The film Brazil shows how detached people are from reality. Violence has become the norm and compassion, and concern for others is no longer important. Even when bombs explode, people are not surprised. They continue as if nothing had happened…half of the paper…attempting to identify information using codes. The lack of a natural environment is clearly visible in the film when Sam escapes into his dream world and dreams of a safe place where there is greenery, natural hills and landscapes. Subdued aesthetic values are represented by disconnections and misalignments in terms of architectural designs used in buildings. The antique setting of Ida Lowry's house shows the ducts that don't fit into the surroundings. Therefore, Brazil describes how postmodernism has distanced society from reality. People are forced to conform to social norms. Technology has been used in postmodernism to give people an image of what they should conform to. As a result, people have used technology as a means to realize their desires and even kill dreams. Viewers wonder whether the city is a reality or just a fragment of Sam's imagination.
