Stories in the media about a celebrity going through a hard time like an addiction make it easy to relate to that celebrity. For example, Robert Downey Jr. battled drug addiction. Those who have also struggled with an addiction will identify with Robert Downey Jr. more than those who have not. This is the same for any celebrity in any situation. We think we know celebrities because we can relate to them through the stories we hear in the media. This makes their deaths more difficult for those who admired them or were related to them. Death itself can be recognizable. For example, my best friend attempted suicide a few years ago and luckily he didn't succeed. Robin Williams' cause of death was suicide, so it hits close to home. Robin Williams' death has raised awareness of depression and suicide. He was a man who was said to always crack jokes. No one realizes that someone can be very depressed when they are always smiling in your presence. This has led people to realize that there are other signs of depression and wanting to commit suicide. Williams' death has encouraged people to raise awareness about depression so that others are able to understand what they are going through and that it is okay to get it.
