After the removal of President Gaddafi from power, Libya sought humanitarian aid due to the emerging war from militia groups operating in the country. New European Union members such as Slovakia, Poland and Hungary were initially praised for adopting democratic models in their governing bodies. However, ten years later, the new members have been criticized for abuse of power and human rights issues. The government has indicated its willingness to crack down on human rights activists. Hungary, in particular, has been criticized for its worsening human rights record compared to the former communist state. Although coup d'état waned by the end of the 20th century, developing countries such as Thailand, Niger, Fiji, and Bangladesh, among others, experienced military takeovers. During the period of seizure, millions of civilians lost their lives while others were displaced from their homes. Teenage boys have been the majority of victims since they were absorbed as soldiers.
