Southern military generals, such as Robert E. Lee, Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson, Pierre – Gustav Toutant Beaureguard, and Nathan Bedford Forrester to name a few. Huge names when it comes to military troop leadership in the history of the Americas. As well as mentioning, seven of the eight Civil War era military academies were located in the South. Suppose there is another possible factor that matters in explaining why the South might have had such great leaders. Speaking of great military leaders, in my opinion, a great leader not only leads his troops during the battles they fight, a great leader must motivate and maintain good morale within his troops, but more importantly, a great leader must know when to stop. On April 9, after four years of civil war, General Robert E. Lee declared before his surrender at Appomattox Courthouse: “It would be useless and therefore cruel, to provoke further bloodshed, and I have arranged a meeting with General Grant with the aim of surrendering." (Lee, 1865).
