A study by Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, compared students who took notes by hand with classmates who took notes on the computer. Its results stated that “the authors showed a better understanding of the content and were more attentive and engaged during class discussions.” This is because “handwriting involves more complex motor functions and takes a little more time than typing.” However, handwriting is unnecessary and time consuming. “With today's already overcrowded school curriculum and the emphasis placed on teaching reading and mathematics, there are simply more important subjects that need to be taught, including keyboarding” (Kysilko).
