The Dursleys, a rich English family, begin to notice strange apparitions around the city. That night Dumbledore, a wizard school master, and McGonagall, a teacher of Dumbledore's, are outside the Dursleys' house when Dumbledore tells her that Voldemort killed the Potters but Harry survived the event. Hagrid, the caretaker of the wizarding school, then arrives carrying baby Harry Potter. Dumbledore leaves Harry and an explanatory note on the doorstep of his relatives, the Dursleys. Ten years later, the entire Dursley household is under the control of the Dursley boy, Dudley, who bullies Harry relentlessly. Dudley is extremely spoiled while Harry is mistreated and lives in a cupboard under the stairs. On Dudley's birthday they go to the zoo, where Harry talks to a snake and the glass of the exhibit vanishes trapping Dudley on the other side. Harry is then punished for this inexplicable event. When they return home, a mysterious letter arrives for Harry from Hogwarts, a wizarding school. Mr. Dursley tries to keep them away from Harry, even when these letters fill every crevice of the house. The Dursleys and Harry leave for a remote island out of fear of these mysterious letters. At midnight on Harry's birthday, a loud bang is heard as the door lowers and Hagrid enters. Hagrid gives Harry one of the letters from Hogwarts, admitting him to the wizarding school. At this point Harry discovers that the Dursleys attempted to hide his magic and lied about his parents' deaths. Hagrid then takes Harry to London to buy school supplies, where he realizes that he is famous among wizards. First they go to the wizarding bank and Harry discovers that his parents left him a small fortune. A continue... in the center of the card... the Stone. The three then decide that they must find the stone before Voldemort does and slip away the next night. They sneak past the three-headed dog and perform other impressive feats using Hermione's knowledge of botany, Ron's chess skill, and Harry's flying skills. Harry continues into the room where the stone is kept and finds Professor Quirrell waiting for him. Harry discovers that Quirrell has been working with Voldemort, harboring him under his turban. When Harry uses the Mirror of Erised to acquire the stone, he is attacked by Quirrell and Voldemort, but Professor Quirrell burns upon contact with Harry and Voldemort flies away to find a new host. The year ends with what appears to be Slytherin winning the house. cup, but taking into account the latest events and last minute points; Gryffindor ends up winning because Harry and his friends save the school.
