The first question I asked was "How are you today?" and other examples of open-ended questions were “What negative experiences have you had with medications you currently take or have taken in the past?” and others like “How have your treatments or medications hindered your ability to do the things you enjoy?” Some open-ended questions presented as a series of open-ended questions, such as “Tell me about your family” to “How do they support you with your medical condition?” to “What kind of support did they give during all of this?” Using these serial open-ended questions allowed me to control the direction of the conversation before it began, because my patient liked to talk for 2-3 minute intervals and usually went off topic or moved on to a new topic in the discussion.
