The Bhopal Disaster took place in India in 1984 at the UCC plant, more than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate leaked from a faulty valve instantly killing over 3800 people in the Bhopal city. It has caused many thousands more to suffer greatly and die from significant morbidity and premature death. The significance of all this was very catastrophic, it is considered the worst man-made disaster. The company tried to divert attention from itself to avoid liability. However they eventually reached a settlement through the courts through mediation and reached a damages amount of $470 million; it was a very small sum considering the real cost of everything. The reason for this major catastrophe all started with the construction of the plant in a light industrial commercial zone, not in a hazardous materials zone.
