Personal care time is an investment in your appearance. Both men and women have spent time and money to look better. However, more women than men care about their physical appearance. In this study, we looked at whether there was a significant difference between gender and time spent on personal care. Seventeen undergraduate students in an experimental psychology course (6 male, 11 female) volunteered to participate in this study. A survey was administered to participants. The survey consisted of questions regarding how much time participants had for grooming on a daily basis. They were asked to provide an approximate time taken for grooming in minutes. Using an independent t test, significant differences were observed between time spent on personal care and gender. The results for female grooming were t (14) = 2.45, p = 0.027 and for male grooming t (14) = 3.14, p = 0.008. Therefore, the results supported our hypothesis that women take significantly longer to groom themselves than men. Based on previous research, women are more concerned about their physical appearance because being young and beautiful is essential to attracting the opposite sex. Altering physical appearance: a study based on gender and time spent on personal groomingPersonal habits how to do showering, bathing, selecting clothing, applying makeup and shaving takes time and is socially valuable. Wax (1957) defines grooming as the “manipulation of one's superficial physical structure so as to make a desired impression on others.” (Wax, 1957, p.588) Time spent on personal grooming is an investment in one's appearance. Both men and women have spent time and money to look better. It is a popular belief that...... middle of paper......if our hypothesis was supported, some factors may have limited our findings. First, our sample size was too small and may have biased the data. When our sample size is small, there will be a lack of subject representation in our data and results. A second factor that may have influenced the results was the wording of the questionnaire. Some students did not understand what they were being asked. Many participants may know the correct answer to the questions, but did not give us the correct answers. This is known as social desirability bias. Participants do not provide the experimenter with the correct information because in many cases many topics are sensitive to many participants. A promising direction for future research could be to explore bias in the workplace, we could see if nicer people are treated better than less beautiful ones. attractive people.
