Topic > How I Met My Husband by Alex Munro - 664

I remember reading all kinds of short stories when I was younger, learning different lessons from the stories. The lesson of the story is basically the theme. The author uses a combination of literary elements to convey the theme. In the story “How I Met My Husband”, by Alice Munro, the theme was a little difficult to understand. After re-reading, decoding and researching the story, I came to the conclusion that the theme hopes for true love. I will explain how Munro uses plot, point of view, and symbolism to describe the theme of the story. The plot of a story describes a series of events that lead to the climax and eventual collapse of a situation. In "How I Met My Husband" the plot starts out a little slow and then speeds up towards the middle. At the beginning we learn that Edie, the protagonist, is a girl hired by the Peebles family. She takes care of the children, cleans the house and cooks for the family. One day, after dressing in Mrs. Peeble's clothes, she goes downstairs and sees a man, Chris, outside the window. This is when all the action starts to happen. They have a little conversation and Chris goes to get water. Edie is afraid that Chris will innocently tell the family about being dressed up, so she goes to talk to him. This is where audiences get their first glimpse of what we think is the beginning of true love. It seems like Chris wants Edie to stay and talk to her longer, but she has to go look after the kids. Then Edie finds out that Chris has a boyfriend, which is a surprise. When Mrs. Peebles and Alice, Chris's girlfriend, go on a picnic, Edie goes to tell Chris about the picnic. Edie is sitting on the edge of Chris' bed and he starts kissing her with “…… middle of paper … what happened. Edie discovers that “there were women waiting and waiting for a letter by the mailboxes” and she no longer wants to be that woman (Clugston, 2010). The hope of love that Edie had been waiting for finally arrived, but not in the form of a letter. It came from the postman. It's ironic how the postman, the boy who was supposed to deliver the love letter, became the love Edie hoped for. “How I Met My Husband” is a great example of how you never know when true love will come. happen. Edie thought it would come from one person, but that person actually prepared her to find love. If Edie hadn't gone to the mailbox and waited for the mail every day, she would never have found what she wanted. Getting to the topic of love wasn't easy, but by looking at the plot, point of view and symbolism of the story, everything became clear..
