Unlike professional deviance, abuse of authority over police is the act of officers using their powers with malice (Barker, 1991). In the most serious cases, abuse of power can lead to death, as happened in the recent shooting of Michael Brown. Officer Darren Wilson targeted 18-year-old Michael Brown, as witnesses recorded, and opened fire, resulting in the 18-year-old's death. This is just one of many examples of corruption that still exists within the police agencies meant to protect us. As mentioned above, social speculation is just one of the problems that police forces face in terms of corruption. Corruption in the police also impacts the economy. Distorting business' competitive playing fields, undermining economic development, and reducing the quality of government services and infrastructure (RCMP, 2014). The World Bank (2009) had even described corruption by stating that “Corruption is a cancer and no country, rich or poor, is immune to it, nor is a multilateral development system”.
