Jamie Nabozny is gay. Today it causes him little, if any, difficulty in life, however, throughout middle and high school Nabozny was physically and verbally harassed; he was beaten, kicked, urinated on, insulted and abused to the point of hospitalization. However, the worst part of the abuse of this innocent victim was the role his administration played, or rather refused to play; no action was taken to protect Nabozny despite the fact that school officials knew what was happening and were repeatedly confronted about his abuse. Over time, Nabozny's abuse led to painful moods, severe depression, suicide attempts, attempts to run away from home, and other drastic consequences. Ultimately, this young vigilante decided to fight back to prevent others from experiencing what he had been through. Nabozny took legal action and, with the help of law firm Lambda Legal, sued his former school officials for failing to do their job of keeping him safe at school, ultimately winning nearly a million dollars in a monetary agreement. Jamie Nabozny's case inspired responses from countless others and forced schools to take responsibility for their actions in cases of bullying. Thanks to this model's singular determination and willingness to assert itself, it has influenced and inspired millions of people. Proving, once and for all, that one person can make a difference. There is no doubt that Jamie Nabozny and his actions have had an impact on the world. Since Nabozny filed his appeal, he has made a formidable step forward in the fight against bullying. Prior to his historic trial no lawsuit had ever been brought against anti-gay violence in schools and although his claim was initially rejected... halfway through... it demonstrated how a single witness' statement can dramatically influence the he outcome of a journey and how a person's actions or inactions can make both good and bad differences, just as Mary Podlesny had a negative effect on Nabozny's life during middle school. Today, bullying is still a big problem; Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying every year and an average of 9 in 10 LGBT kids say they have been victims of bullying. Many of these victims are afraid to ask for or are denied help by their schools and school districts. However, that doesn't mean that nothing can be done to help people who are victims of bullying, even one person taking a stand against bullying can make a huge difference and if there's something everyone can agree on it's that no one wants to be bullied. So take a stand against bullying, make a difference and maybe, just maybe, make the world a little better..
