Topic > Literary Analysis of Hope Is A Thing by Emily Dickinson...

"Hope is a thing with feathers---" symbolizes the individual's inner bird, which faces and survives terrible storms in one's life experiencing feelings of hope. Hope is a gift that helps an individual's soul keep their dreams alive. People who need to escape from their normal life find the best way to do so. Likewise, the authors want to fly and engage their minds to travel from place to place, to different eras, and even dream of being close to their loved ones. Therefore, the content of this poem invites its readers to fly with the author and learn about her inner motivation to continue dreaming. The soft tone is supported by the first line of Dickinson's poem; “Hope” is that feathered thing/that rests in the soul” (1-2). The author uses metaphor in these lines where she compares her dreams to feathers. The feathers represent wisdom, freedom and spirituality and he used a philosophical way to describe hope. The hope he felt was rooted deep within him and he now carried it permanently with him. Dickinson
