This led to a decrease in traditional Roman values because before Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire, the Roman people had a strong belief in polytheism . Since the polytheistic vision was abandoned, no one saw the Emperor as a deity which in turn took away his power. People began to shift their faith in the city to belief in a single deity. With such great attention on the new religion, many religious leaders began to emerge in the political fields. This was bad for the Roman people because their government was already weak and with the increased political power given to religious leaders it would only begin to make governing even more difficult. It was really difficult for a weakened government that was originally based on polytheism to transition to monotheism because that would only serve to remove more power from the government.
