In this scholarly study I will focus on the life and work of Julia Margaret Cameron and discuss the extent to which her photographic practice has been influenced, limited or enabled by working in a male dominated profession environment. By the end of this essay the reader should understand how he dealt with the negative feedback and criticism he received. She was not particularly well regarded as a professional photographer at the time, but she is now one of the most inspiring photographers of the 19th century. Julia Margaret Cameron was a British pioneer of female photography. Cameron was born on 11 June 1815 and died on 26 January 1879. Cameron was born in Calcutta in 1815 and studied in France, then eventually returned to Calcutta and married at the age of twenty-three to a well-known twenty-year-old civil servant. older than her. His name was Charles Hay Cameron. She became the chief hostess of Calcutta, continued to take care of the house and conceived six children. She was so happy with her first and only daughter that she named her Julia after herself. There were later five more children, one of whom he named Henry, after a close friend of his who had a great impact on his life. The marriage of Julia and her husband was long-lasting and full of happiness despite the age difference and they had similar creative interests. (book reference) Women in the 19th century were not encouraged to take photography as it was a highly male-dominated profession. Very few women had the resources to start full-time professional photography studios, even though they were present in all phases of photographic creation. For example, the wives of male photographers were often used in their work, such as the wife of Felix Bonfil... middle of paper ......if in whatever she undertook, her rare self-forgetfulness and willingness to help others, has endeared her to a wide circle of friends. The phenomenal quality and strength of his work was unfortunately not particularly recognizable to much of the public during his lifetime. After Julia's death in 1879, her photographs were virtually discarded for about a hundred years, but fortunately they are now appreciated much more. The exhibitions organized for her work helped to restore and distinguish Julia's exceptional skill. I learned through my research for this study that Cameron was an exceptional woman who had an astonishing impact on the Victorian social and photographic scene, influencing not only amateur and professional photographers, but anyone fascinated by Victorian women and the way in which they strived to become a more important part of society.
