Topic > Women Have the Right to Abortion - 1835

The issue of abortion has always been controversial for citizens of the United States. Abortion is the practice of terminating a pregnancy after the embryo has been implanted in the uterus (Abortion). An individual's position on this controversial issue classifies them into one of two very different groups. An individual who believes that a woman should not have an abortion, due to moral or religious views, is called “pro-life.” Coincidentally, those who believe that a woman should have the right to choose abortion are called “pro-choice.” Supporters of the "pro-life" movement believe that the practice of abortion is immoral. Supporters claim that abortion is immoral because it takes away the rights of the unborn fetus, as activists believe that human life begins with contraception (Jones). “Pro-life” advocates also believe that the practice of abortion can lead to medical problems – such as emotional distress – following the surgical procedure (Cords). Pro-choice advocates refute these claims. Abortion advocates believe that a woman should have the ability to decide what should or should not be done to her body. Activists also highlight cases - such as an abnormal pregnancy or the dangers that could be faced if the pregnancy were forced to proceed - that support the health and well-being of the pregnant woman (Reasons Offered for Abortion). Supporters also express examples such as abandoning a partner or trying to achieve equality in the workplace as other reasons for abortion (Reasons Offered for Abortion). Many opinions across the county create a fight over who should have the final decision to govern the practice. The practice of abortion has been a crucial option for terminating dangerous and unwanted pregnancies, although supporters point to religion. 7 March 2012 "Hypertension represents 20% of pregnancy problems - Unicef."
