Religious Views on Organ and Tissue Donation: A Canadian Perspective. The organ donation rate in Canada, despite efforts in recent years, has not grown as much as expected. (norris, 2011) Canada also has one of the lowest rates of deceased donors among industrialized countries. (www.fundapoyarte.com) The fact is that religious concerns can be an important reason why patients or their families refuse to donate organs, especially when it comes to organ donations after death. At the point of death, people are extremely cautious and this is the time when the question of faith becomes crucial and families and family clergy are likely to become involved. If the donor's or family's religion says no to this life-saving practice, the opportunity for donation may be lost. In some cases families refuse to donate because they are not aware of their religion's position on organ donation and transplantation; and there is nothing worse than missing the opportunity to donate an organ because of a false belief. Therefore, for organ donation and transplantation to reach optimal levels, it is crucial to understand the perspectives of religious groups. This article explains the views of all major religions and religious groups in Canada regarding organ donation and transplantation. The main religions in Canada are: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism. (Transplantation, 2006)ChristianityMost Christian denominations are in favor of organ donation and transplantation and call them a demonstration of Christian love (Transplantation, 2006). The majority of people in Canada are Roman Catholic, and when it comes to organ donation and transplantation… at the heart of the document… I have a Catholic perspective. (2001, February).
