Topic > The Problem of Global Terrorism - 1531

Terrorism, which has always existed, has been on the rise in the last ten years. Terrorists use assassinations, kidnappings, hijackings, and bombings to pursue a political agenda. These extremists are not limited to the United States; Terrorism exists all over the world in various forms. There are many different types of terrorism, each with its own purpose. The main goal of terrorist acts is to force a change in one's nation's government. If terrorists are unhappy with their government's policy positions, they may end up taking matters into their own hands. Another reason for terrorist acts is hatred towards a race, nationality or religion. For example, in 1972, the Palestine Liberation Organization invaded Israeli dormitories during the Munich Olympics and held Israeli athletes hostage until Israel agreed to release Palestinian terrorists captured in Israel. When Israel refused to meet the terrorists' demands, it blew up two helicopters carrying Israeli athletes, killing the entire team. This was one of many cruel forms of terrorism. In recent years, terrorism seems to be on the increase and attacks are more violent than in the past. The covert nature of terrorism and lack of warning make it a difficult problem to address. Despite the efforts of many governments, these cowardly acts continue to increase. While there are no foolproof ways to predict when a terrorist will strike next, there are still potential solutions to consider. However, it is important to recognize that there is no complete answer to this problem and that terrorism cannot be eliminated entirely. During the bombing of the World Trade Center and the federal building in Oklahoma, rented moving trucks were used to transport the bombs. One idea I have for preventing this type of attack would be to take photographs or videos of the people renting the trucks, along with their Social Security numbers. I would install an electronic smoke detector in each rental truck that could be connected to a nationwide satellite network to let investigators know what type of materials the truck is carrying. For example, if the truck was carrying dynamite, the sensor would transmit the message to the satellite that the truck was carrying hazardous material. In turn, the dispatchers could send the message to the Federal Bureau of Investigations, which would then send the bomb squad to the location of the truck, arrest the people driving and defuse the bomb. It seems that terrorists prefer to plant bombs in parking lots located under or inside buildings. One solution to this problem is to implement vehicle screening for all cars entering government buildings that could potentially be targeted for an attack. This measure alone could discourage terrorists from attempting to enter a building carrying any type of explosive device. Additionally, the use of metal detectors on people entering government buildings, as well as dogs trained to detect bombs in vehicles, can also help improve the situation. One of the deadliest terrorist attacks is the hijacking of airplanes. There have been numerous hijackings that resulted in the plane being bombed in mid-air. In 1986, a Boeing 747 Panamerican plane exploded in mid-air, killing all on board. A major terrorist group claimed responsibility for this action. Once again, in the late 1980s, a Transworld airline flight was hijacked and made several stops before commandos rushed the plane and killed some..
