Topic > Technology Trends - 1930s

INTRODUCTION It seems that every year people are turning more and more to living their lives through technology. It has flooded society, families, work and life. Three developing trends that somewhat overlap are specifically related to living in a technological world. These trends are especially important to the school librarian because many students live their lives through the web. To reach these students, the librarian must be knowledgeable about trends and applications and be able to use and apply them in a library context. By using them, the librarian makes the library relevant to the students and brings the library to the students where the students are. The first trend is social communication through various tools on the web; the second trend is the use of collaborative tools and sharing information with the masses via the web; the third trend is social networking via the web. While some of the applications listed under each of these trends have been around for a while, more and more platforms or applications are being developed every day, and sometimes those platforms might fit comfortably into more than one of these trend categories. Library professionals are charged with the task of not only keeping up with the ever-changing world of technology, but also being leaders in the use of technology. The trends and applications that fall under these trends will be discussed in the following sections. Additionally, some applications will be discussed along with ideas for using those applications in a library environment, particularly in a school library environment, although many applications could apply to other types of libraries.
