First, most slave owners resorted to physical abuse to maintain control over their slaves. For example, when Solomon was first sold into the slave trade, a slave trader attempted to beat him with a paddle into admitting that he was a slave from Georgia instead of a free man from New York (12 Years a Slave, 2014) . If Solomon had been allowed to use his name and identity, someone might have recognized who he was and slave owners would have lost the ability to profit from him. Therefore, they needed to control Solomon into admitting that he was a slave, and they accomplished this through physical violence. Furthermore, when Solomon arrived at the Ford plantation, Mistress Ford said to Solomon, “The master brought you here to work, another will earn you a hundred lashes” (12 Years a Slave, 2014). Mrs. Ford wanted Solomon to understand that he was a slave and nothing more, and the threat of physical violence served as a reinforcement to legitimize her statement. Second, enslaved women had a dual role in the world of slavery. They had to work all day and were often raped at night by their owners.
