Okay, let's face it, our world as we know it is being swallowed up by technology and there is nothing we can do to stop it. Video games are becoming part of the daily lives of people of all ages around the world. Almost everyone who has a smartphone has an app that is a game, guess what a video game is. There are many benefits to playing video games in areas such as the medical/healthcare field, learning skills that will aid educational goals, and even social benefits. Medical and Health Benefits of Video Games There are many medical and health benefits of playing video games in areas such as; rehabilitation, teaching self-care skills, safe sex practices, and children with cancer. A video game focused on motivation aA 2011 study showed that 70% of people played with a friend and that there are millions of people who play online games featuring virtual social communities (Bowen, 2014). An online gamer myself I normally play with people, mostly friends of mine that I grew up with or worked with over the years, that I no longer get to see regularly, so video games are how we stay in touch. Playing games designed to make players cooperate and support each other has shown that players gain prosocial skills (Granic. Lobel. Engels. 2014). Being able to apply these attributes in video games simplifies the transition to being able to do it in everyday life. Failure is an important part of life, and playing video games is a good way to learn how to cope and become resilient in the face of life's daily failures (Bowen, 2014). I learned some of that skill and that resilience from video games, because you get beat a lot in all kinds of games and you have to learn to deal with those failures. Being happy is an important part of life and dealing with stress is part of being happy, easily accessible games such as playing games on your phone have been shown to improve mood and reduce stress (Bowen, 2014). Let's face it, everyone likes to be happy and have less stress in their life
