The film, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, documents the annihilation of the American Indians in the late 1800s. The film begins in the Black Hills of Dakota, a land sacred to the Sioux Native Americans. The Sioux reclaimed the land and their population flourished due to the good resources in the area. The whites want to take control of the territory and force the natives to move to another area. They want the natives to assimilate and believe that this strategy will improve the nation. Senator Henry Dawes proposes the plan to move the natives to several reservations, where they will be able to learn the ways of the whites. Dawes uses an Americanized Native named Ohiyesa, or Charles, as evidence of the success of assimilation. The Sioux are forced to assimilate to protect their lives. When Chief Sitting Bull and his people fled their homelands to Canada, they lost all the resources they once relied on. This has led to multiple deaths due to lack of food, heat and much more.
