Even if telling the lie is to benefit others, it is wrong and immoral. Kantians are not interested in consequences, but only in the purity of the will. This trait is one of the fundamental differences between a Kantian and a rule utilitarian. Rule utilitarians are only concerned with consequences and do not even consider the purity of the will. Just like Kantians, rule utilitarians do not believe in exceptions to rules. They are primarily concerned with what has the best overall consequences for society. A non-tolerant attitude towards exceptions is one of the problems of both methodologies. The lack of exceptions to the rules could lead to unsatisfactory results in some cases.
